On Sunday September 20th, we went to Toronto to interview Bella Black. Black is an ordinary girl who does an extraordinary thing. She raises money to build a school for children in Haiti. She knew that Haiti had a earthquake in 2010 and lots of people lost their lives, so she wanted to help give them what is their right to have – education.
She started raising money since she was in grade one. Every year, there is one baking sale. This year is her 6th annual baking sale and she wants to build a school for every year she is in school. She is now in 6th grade and is still continuing the sale “I want to continue this sale for until I’m in college or university and then with my kids when I grow up”.
When we got there, a huge party was happening just in front of Black’s house. Neighbours and friends gathered around the table buying delicious treats. This year, Black made 190 cupcakes, six mini-cakes and one big funnel cake. The cupcakes were sold for $2 each. A smile was on everyone’s faces. There was just so many people going and coming to support the charity.
“Because it is very unfair that kids don’t get to go to school and other kids in other countries do, so I just wanted to make a difference,” said Black. She decided that she would step up and make a change there.
The earthquake was a real tragedy. After a few months, the buildings were still collapsed and a lot of the corpses were still remaining. Many survivors had to sell their personal belongings to make money for food and basic needs.
I think that Black is doing a great thing for the world and I really like the idea. Even though Haiti might seem poor and people lost from the earthquake, but because of people like Bella Black, Haiti is continuously making progress to recover. We should use this bake sale as inspiration for others to help each other and other countries that have been affected by not just a natural disaster but anything. Be sure to check out Bella’s annual baking sale next year!
